The Gurja Valley trek is a newly discovered route that offers trekkers a unique Nepal experience. Alone the way, we will pass through picturesque villages, rushing rivers, magical forests with breathtaking views of the Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and Gurja Himal. This trek allows trekkers to discovers, engage, involve, exchange and learn about the rich history and culture of the Chantyal and Bishwakarma tribes. Ancient weaving and metal work tradition that has been carried on from generations still largely practiced by the villagers. Due to its basic infrastructure, we only recommend this trek to adventure seeking people who have experience in the outdoors. An average day of walking will be 7 hours. This trek is mostly homestay with limited services.
After an early breakfast we will start our drive from 3 Sisters Guest House. We will follow the Beni/Beglung highway for 3 hours. From Beni onwards, we will drive on dirt road following the river until Darbang. In Darbang we will stop for lunch and continue our trek for 2 to 2.5 hours to Dharapani (our fist night stay). We will follow the Myagdi river bed for half an hour through rice fields and small villages. Along the way, we will have the opportunity to see daily life of the rural people, such as farming, washing, cleaning, etc. After an hour and half, we will walk uphill through pine forest all the way to Dharapani. This relatively bigger village of 200 households has a population of about 500 people. Most of the ethnic groups that reside in this valley include Chhetri, Gurung, Magar and Dalits. This picturesque valley has typical houses and one can really enjoy the Nepali hospitality in this village. Altitude of Dharapani 1560m. If the weather is clear, we will see views of Gurja Himal and Mt.Dhaulagiri.
After breakfast at 7:30am, we will make a gentle two hours walk through villages of Takam and Sibang. After Sibang we will start climbing uphill for two more hours through wide mountain dirt road. From here we will descend for half an hour to Phalegaon, where we will stop and enjoy our lunch. Phalegaon is very beautiful. Here we can see lots of green fields and traditional houses. After lunch we will continue our trek for gradual two hours uphill to Lumsung 2190m.
Today we will stay one more night in Gurjakhani. We will see the sunrise in the morning and do a day hike from where we can see Gurja Himal, valleys and other villages down the valley. We will see apple orchards and sea buckthorn trees. The rest of the day we will spend exploring the village, where we will have the opportunity to interact with the villagers and watch the women carding, spinning, weaving and felting wool harvested from their sheep.
After breakfast we will start our trek. Today's trek is also mostly through the forest. We will descend downhill for two hours, and then we will gradual trek for another two hours. Along the way, we will see Gurja Himal and smaller hills. We will stop for pack lunch by the bridge and enjoy the surrounding farming area and cow sheds. After lunch we will make a steep uphill of one and a half hour to Gurja Khani, which is the largest settlement of the Chantyal tribe. This is a unique traditional village where people are still living like in the past. This hidden and unexplored village is the ancestral home of the Chantyal tribe, who came to this valley in search of copper. There are 250 households of which 150 households belong to Chantyal (Tibeto-Mongolian ethnic group) and the remaining to the Bishowakarma caste (blacksmiths). Some 200 years ago, Chantyal people would mine and the Bishowakarma people would process the ore into copper products. Today, both these tribes depend on agriculture and livestock for livelihood, but a few families of Bishwakarma still do metal work.
We will start early in the morning and carry a packed lunch for the day. There are stunning views of Pyutar, Churen, and Gurja Himal along the route. The path descends for ½ hour to cross the Dhaula river, and then climbs to reach fields and farmsheds after one hour. For the next 2-3 hours the path rises through cane forest, from time to time dropping down to cross the stream. Altogether the stream will be crossed 7-8 times on the climb. Rugachaur Pass (3850m) is reached after a final steep climb of one hour or more. Lunch will be eaten at the Pass. Eidelweiss and gentians can be seen here, and occasionally Blue Sheep. The route down to Gurjaghat is a gentle and beautiful walk through grazing land, pines, and craggy cliffs. Other animals such as the civet cat might be seen. Gurjaghat 3010M) in the Dhorpatan valley is reached after 3-4 hours.
In the morning we follow a broad path which climbs gently but steadily to reach Jaljalla Pass after 4 hours. At the pass there are dramatic views of the whole Dhaulagiri range and part of the Annapurnas. Lunch will be eaten at the pass. In the afternoon the path descends through light forest with views of the Himalayan peaks continuing (if the weather is clear). The small village of Moreni is reached after 2-3 hours.
